The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes turkey, pies, cookies... now I'm getting hungry.

But with all that comes a spike in kitchen fires and kitchen related accidents.  Some items to keep in mind during the holiday season to keep everyone happy and healthy:

- Check your fire extinguishers - First, make sure you have extinguishers, especially one available in the kitchen.  Then, be sure they are up to date and charged for use if needed.

- Avoid loose clothing - Clothing, towels, and cloth hot pads can all be very flammable items.  Be sure to keep them away from the stove tops and ovens.

- Watch the kids - It's great fun to work with kids in the kitchen, but be sure they're aware of sharp objects, heat or open flames, and any items that might be a safety concern.

- Knife safety - It's easy to get distracted when 20 things are going on in the kitchen, so be aware of knife safety, especially if there are young ones around.

- Food safety - A kitchen meat thermometer is helpful to be sure you're cooking everything to proper temperature.  Then it's important to get leftovers into the fridge as soon as possible.

With all that said, I think it's time to eat and enjoy the holidays!
